Myanmar’s central region Shan State has become a popular sourcing place among international buyers, Chin State still remains an area of untamed wilderness. Small coffee quantities are growing on untouched soil. Chin is also known for horrible road conditions, landslides during the raining season and fights in neighboring Rakhine State. So, what brings a social start-up enterprise to go that extra mile? Together with my partner, Priscilla Daniel, we are sharing our exceptional experience with the newly launched cooperative Chin Litai and putting into context the evolution of the coffee sector in Myanmar.

Myanmar Supply Chain Summit (29.03.2017)

As surprising as it may seem, speaking about "global supply chain” in relation with Myanmar’s coffee distribution is new. The coffee sector in Myanmar is still very young and only last year, the first two containers left Yangon’s port towards the US. While Myanmar’s coffee market is growing, the supply chain has become a core matter for producers and buyers to deepen their connections with one another. Mobile technology spurred a paradigm change and created new ways of communication and trade. The question is to what extend this new mobile technology enhances direct trade and whether the supply chain is more efficient and more transparent when producers and consumers are linked. We want to have closer look at how the mobile technology has been reshaping the relation between coffee origin and the global markets.
